The Kitchen Mini Reno: 2021 → 2026

No major renovation.

No new cabinets.

No knocking down walls.

Just a few small changes that somehow made the whole room feel different…and a lot cozier.

When I look at these side-by-side photos, it’s kind of wild. Same layout. Same table. Same house.

But the vibe has definitely shifted.

2021

She was cute.

The blue patterned rug was bold.

The gray dining set was…very gray.

And there were a lot of details happening at once.

It worked. I liked it.

But it was visually busy.

2026

Now everything feels warmer and more pulled together.

The biggest difference? The rug.

Swapping the bold blue pattern for a simple round jute completely changed the tone of the space. It instantly calmed things down and made the room feel more grounded.

Then I added a green gingham tablecloth inspired by a MUCH pricier Anthropologie version. I’m slightly obsessed. It gives that relaxed European café feel without trying too hard.

The kitchen island got a refresh too. I stained the top and attempted the base before realizing I am not, in fact, a precision painter. Hubby stepped in and saved it.

Now it all feels cohesive instead of like separate pieces competing with each other.

What Actually Made the Difference

• Fewer patterns

• Warmer tones

• More natural texture

• Editing instead of adding

Nothing dramatic. Just intentional swaps.

I didn’t need a full remodel. I just needed to simplify.

I’ll source everything in the comments if you’re curious about any of it.

Which version do you prefer — bold and patterned or softer and layered?
